Description
This work impresses me with the subtle intensity of the sitter’s gaze and the refined modeling of the face. Look closely at the layered treatment of his hair and the delicately painted knot of the cravat – these details speak volumes about the artist’s hand.
RARE ANTIQUE GERMAN PORTRAIT – SIGNED OIL PAINTING FROM 1853
This antique oil painting presents a distinguished 19th-century portrait of a German gentleman, aged 33. The sitter’s features are modeled with care and precision, emerging from a neutral background in natural light. His formal black coat, crisp white collar, and warm-toned cravat speak of refinement and dignity typical of bourgeois life in the Biedermeier era.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: JOHANN VELTEN — A RENOWNED PORTRAITIST OF THE DÜSSELDORF SCHOOL
Johann Velten (1807–1883) was a distinguished German portraitist of the Düsseldorf School, known for his unembellished psychological realism and deep connection to the rising bourgeois class of the Mosel region. Born into modest circumstances in Graach an der Mosel, Velten’s talent was nurtured by a local patron, enabling him to study at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Heinrich Christoph Kolbe. His style, influenced by Kolbe’s precise and unpretentious classicism, matured through extended stays in Belgium, particularly Liège. Velten became a sought-after portrait painter among the affluent bourgeoisie, favoring direct, unidealized depictions that captured both social identity and inner character. His works are recognized today for their rare authenticity and historic value, notably his politically charged “Gefängnißscene” (1849), a vivid testimony to the 1848–49 revolution in the Moselle region. Paintings by Velten are held in museums and private collections across Germany and Europe.
COLLECTIBLE ORIGINAL – SIGNED WORK IN GOLD FRAME
Executed in oil on canvas, the artwork is signed and dated 1853 by J. Velten. It includes a rare handwritten note on the back: “alt 33 Jahr”, confirming the sitter’s age. The piece is housed in a beautiful gilded frame of the same period, richly decorated with baroque flourishes and aged patina, enhancing its historical charm and collectible appeal.
