His style, influenced by Kolbe’s precise and unpretentious classicism, matured through extended stays in Belgium, particularly Liège. Velten became a sought-after portrait painter among the affluent bourgeoisie, favoring direct, unidealized depictions that captured both social identity and inner character. His works are recognized today for their rare authenticity and historic value, notably his politically charged “Gefängnißscene” (1849), a vivid testimony to the 1848–49 revolution in the Moselle region.
